Slowing Down

Teacup and saucer are from La Tresorerie

The last few months have been a bit of a whirlwind. If you've been following my blog you'll know that I've done a lot of moving around, and that I'm now happily settled in the Marais (until the end of September that is). I've had some lows, but also some amazing highs. I've made some wonderful friends, who have helped see me through the rough times, gained my independence and have been focussing more on what I want career-wise and generally in life. Also during this time, I've had some great exposure through Instagram, culminating in another one of my photos being featured on the app's feed yesterday. Gaining a bigger audience, means I've been able to work with some brands, publications and people that I admire, but it also means more responsibility and pressure (that I put on myself). I'm one of those people who is always pushing themselves, never quite satisfied with what they've done. And although I'm learning to be happy with what I have and seeing this constant need for perfection as a positive, rather than a negative thing (one of my little quirks), I also realise that it is the thing that's going to get me to where I want to be.

Yesterday was a public holiday in France, and although I didn't take the time to rest, despite this post's title (I've been catching up on freelance work), I did take the time to reflect on a few things, including this space, my blog.

Something I've been wanting to do for a while is photograph people's homes and focus my attention a little more on how people live. So now that things are a little quieter, I'm going to put that plan into action. Another thing I want to do is hone my photography skills and find my own style. I've been playing around a lot recently, experimenting, learning from some great friends and trying to figure out what I enjoy taking photos of. I now know I like photographing interiors, objects (fashion), food and still life, so that is what I'm going to concentrate on (or try to). And I would like to bring a little more structure to this blog. So hopefully you'll see a few things changing and improving here in the coming weeks.

What are your goals for the coming months?

  4. Congrats on finding a home and for the well-deserved recognition of your mad skills! I'm really excited by your idea to shoot more homes, and can't wait to see what projects you come up with! I'm obsessed with interior design but also by how each person feathers their nest with physical representations of their thoughts, spirit and preferences. I love poking around homes and shooting when I can, although my personal goal for shooting is to focus on the city where I live more -- San Francisco is so beautiful, and I want to work harder on capturing the specific spirit and beauty of San Francisco -- the architecture, landscapes, people, gardens, art and homes -- with my photography and with each blog post.
Lovely post here, with beautiful photographs. Best of luck to you in the upcoming months with your goals!

    1. Thanks for your comment Kathryn and kind words - apologies for the late reply! Yes it was almost a full time job finding somewhere, but le Marais was worth it ;) and so great you come from Canterbury too!

  6. Hi there Marissa,
I just stumbled across your blog this evening and this particular blog post really struck a chord with me. I am relatively new to this blogging/Instagramming world and have been finding it a little.. overwhelming to say the least. I have a backlog of drafts, too many photos to sort through and my normal day to day life to manage as well! At times, I feel as though I am losing touch with what I actually enjoyed doing in the first place and I am too busy trying to document Paris rather than just, enjoy it. Browsing through your blog has had a very calming, almost therapeutic (?) effect (you have a beautifully clean, refreshing aesthetic style) and this post really resonated with me. I need to slow down! If anything, I think I will be more productive after slowing down instead of continually getting distracted by the notion of always trying to catch up.
Looking forward to your future posts, I am loving your style that is shining through!
    Good night, Nhan :)

    1. Thanks for your comment Nhan! Yes it can be a bit overwhelming, but just go slow and steady and don't put too much pressure on yourself! Glad you found my blog therapeutic, that's really kind of you! I also tried to make it as minimal as possible, to just show off the photos and to not get too complicated. Good luck with yours and yes just don't get stressed over it - it's meant to be enjoyable! All the very best xxx
